The Jersey Hedgehog Preservation Group was started in 1992 primarily to look after underweight autumn juveniles. But we quickly realised that this would be an all year round job! We now look after about 350-400 hogs a year and there are always hedgehogs in residence at our two sanctuaries. In addition we have a number of "enclosed garden" carers who look after permanently disabled hedgehogs which cannot be returned to the wild for various reasons.
We are members of the Association of \Jersey Charities and are licenced under the Jersey Wildlife Law 1994 as an animal sanctuary. We are also affiliated to the JSPCA.
Increasing public awareness - by giving talks and radio interviews, features in the local press and occasional television appearances - is a very important part of what we do. Even though hedgehogs are such a "common" animal, people do not know much about them because of their nocturnal habits and maybe because of their instinct to roll up into a tight ball if approached.
