It has been a very hard summer for our hedgehogs. The long hot summer made it difficult for them to find natural food and water. Lots of people were providing them with supplementary food and water which undoubtedly saved many lives. The unlucky ones we admitted were often in a very poor state and sometimes near to death. As winter approaches, please don't stop putting out food and water for any hedgehog which may visit your garden. If you want to deter rats from your feeding station, it has been proved that fixing lengths of metal chain over the entrance will keep them away but not upset the hedgehogs.

If you are building a bonfire, please only set light to it on the day that you build it. Hedgehogs will nest in piles of brushwood, so if you leave your pile for even one night it could have attracted a lodger! Please take care.
